Backing a result
You bet that something will happen. If it does, you win stake × (odds − 1). If not, you lose your stake.
- Back ₹1,000 at 1.80 → win ₹800
- Lose → you lose ₹1,000
Laying a result
You bet that something won't happen — you take the bookmaker's side. If it doesn't happen, you win the backer's stake.
- Lay ₹1,000 at 1.82 → win ₹1,000
- Result happens → you pay ₹820 (your liability)
How to Work Out Liability
When you lay, the amount you can lose is called your liability:
Liability = Lay stake × (Lay odds − 1)
Laying ₹1,000 at 1.82 gives a liability of ₹820. Laying ₹1,000 at 4.00 gives a liability of ₹3,000 — so laying long odds can be risky even with a small stake.
